With so many garbage disposal models and brands in the market, choosing the ideal unit for your kitchen sink can be a daunting task. In addition, there are a few factors you need to consider before you replace an old garbage disposal or install a new one in your kitchen drain. More importantly, you have to ask yourself; do all garbage disposals fit all sinks?
Lucky for you, that’s what we’ll be looking at in this blog post.
Let’s get right into it!
Do garbage disposals fit all sinks?
Yes, most garbage disposals can fit most kitchen sinks on the market. Here’s why!
First, garbage disposals are universal. Therefore, they can fit any kitchen sink with a standard drain hole size of 3.5 – 4”.
In addition, all kitchen sinks are compatible with standard drain pipes in the United States. Specifically, all garbage disposals have a standard drain size of 1.5”, irrespective of their brands and models. This is the standard size of drain pipes in every household, whether one has a garbage disposal unit or not.
That said, you can buy any garbage disposal unit you want and install it without changing the existing pipe connection. This makes the installation process much easier. However, it’s not a good idea to buy a random garbage disposal and install it under your sink. Besides, garbage disposals are available in different shapes & sizes. For that reason, it’s important to consider other aspects like the type of features a specific model has, motor size, and so on instead of buying any garbage disposal just because all models fit all kitchen sinks.
Are mounting assemblies of all garbage disposal units the same size?
If you know how to install a garbage disposal, you’ll realize that most units follow the same installation procedure. To be precise, they’re installed under a kitchen sink using a mounting assembly that consists of a flange. The flange is inserted through the sink’s drain hole and a mounting assembly to which the disposal is hooked up by a simple twist & lock mechanism.
One thing you need to note though is that there are 2 types of mounting assemblies for garbage disposals. That is; EZ and 3-bolt. EZ mounting assemblies are mainly used by garbage disposal brands like WasteMaid and Waste King, while 3-bolt mounts are common in brands like Moen and InsinkErator.
Garbage disposal installation using these mounting assemblies is slightly different. However, these mounting assemblies can be used on all sinks!
Can you install a garbage disposal on a single-bowl kitchen sink?
Yes, you can install a garbage disposal unit in a single-bowl kitchen sink. Installing a garbage disposal under a single-bowl kitchen sink is easier than putting it under a double-bowl kitchen sink.
However, before you buy a garbage disposal for your single-bowl sink, you should check whether there is enough space under the sink to accommodate the unit. Also, you should check whether the pipes under the sink are perfectly aligned or not. More importantly, you’ll need an electrical outlet or wiring beneath the single-bowl kitchen sink to power your garbage disposal.
Can you put a garbage disposal in an under-mount sink?
Like with other types of kitchen sinks, you can install a garbage disposal under an under-mount sink. However, you should ensure the under mount sink has all the components required to make it compatible with the garbage disposal.
More importantly, you should make sure that the kitchen sink has been installed properly before you mount the garbage disposal unit. Otherwise, the under-mount sink will fall off when you mount a garbage disposal if it is poorly fitted. This is because under-mount sinks are installed under the counter, unlike conventional kitchen sinks that are inserted inside a space or a pre-cut hole in the countertop.
Conclusion: do all garbage disposals fit all sinks?
Almost all kitchen sinks on the market are compatible with garbage disposal units. However, there are a few sinks that might not be compatible with the particular garbage disposal model that you buy. Also, considering that there are different types of kitchen sinks, it’s good to measure your sink before you buy a garbage disposal. But if you’re planning to buy a disposal and sink together, you can simply check if both units are compatible or not.
